You can try some positive conditioning as well - its not always about
yelling and hitting.  Especially, if the dog has a history of abuse.  Also,
get a clicker. It speeds up conditioning 2-3x.  Lastly, theres no point in
doing anything even 5 seconds after the fact. They wont associate anything
you say or do with their "bad" act.  Theres tons of good info out there.
