The NGPCA was one of the reasons we went with a Livestock Guardian Dog
instead of a hound or something else. We wanted a dog that was low
maintenance as far as vet visits go.
It didn't hurt that we'd met several different Pyrs, Bernese Moutain Dogs,
Newfoundlands and they were all big goofy lovebugs.

It does depend a lot on the breed. That's excellent that your breed works
so hard to maintain good breeding stock. In my own breed, shelties, the
national breed club ASSA is very focused on conformation and little else.
The folks that work their dogs and do canine sports get little credit or
support from the club, and are very frustrated with how the breed seems to
be going...too heavy boned and coated to be good for working. Very similar
to what happens in a lot of breeds like many retrievers where we end up
seeing a split in the breed and you have "show dogs" versus "field dogs".

JRTs are very new to AKC and many people in the breed were VERY against
it, as was the JRTCA. Similar to the fight when border collies were added.
These are two breeds who still are highly prized for their work ability,
not their looks, and there was a lot of concern about what AKC recognition
would do to the breed. But there are so many great performance events in
AKC now, agility being one where JRTs really excel in particularly. They
are definitely an extremely active, intelligent breed of dog that can be a
wonderful pet....as long as you have a lot of time to keep them busy!
