Ok, so let's say Kerry was a critic of US foreign policy and went to Vietnam to prove his point. He still served and served in combat, defending his country in 2 ways: 1.) By putting his life on the line to save himself and troops, directly and physically contributing to the war effort. 2.) collecting information to help carry his country's foreign policy in a direction that he felt was sane.
