I do not consider that argument silly. I run (or have run at some point in 
time) my own custom versions of software like Firefox, Thunderbird, PostgreSQL 
and Apache. I don't like doing so because it is extremely time consuming, but 
it is a valid argument.

BTW, the second part of the argument goes "or pay a third party to fix it for 
you".
