Tim,

But you were Army, training for Iraq, yes? Correct me if I'm wrong, but
regular Air Force doesn't have nearly the same qualifying course, right? You
know more about this than I do.

We train these days on specialty positions like center axis relock which are
close to the body and allow you to use your pistol inside melee range.

Why? Because you do sometimes end up super close to the bad guys and need
to be able to still stoop the threat.

If you're patrolling in a city or town you are going to be in close contact
with the public, and with the enemy. I've had someone put their hands on my
weapon before, he got slugged with knuckles on. He's lucky as hell I knew
he was just curious or he would have been shot.

Pal, I'm a 46 year-old fat guy, and back in the day (many moons ago) I
trained in either Tae Kwon Do or American Karate almost every day, so I know
what "martial arts" can and can't do, and I can drop your ass attempting to
do *anything* with me starting from a holstered pistol coming through a door
with you anywhere in that classroom. If we see each other, you lose.
  Period.

Can you please point to one instance of your scenario *ever* happening to
someone who wasn't just a complete incompetent with a firearm?

Crouch your tiger and hide your dragon all you want, your ass still goes
  down.
