3 books! It's a trilogy with all kinds of "religion is evil" overtones if not outright saying so a 1000 times. Book 1 is awesome! Book 2 is pretty good. Book 3 is off the deep end a bit. Overall I found it similar to the 2001 trilogy: the first two books were good, the last one a let down, but that's just me. I would definitely recommend them all! People compare them to Tolkein, but I personally don't think it's as good however they are great books. They're kind of a quantum physics/fantasy/phychological book.
