I ALWAYS adhered to this. Never let my cats out. But my current cat ... I can't keep him inside and I gave up trying. We're in a cul de sac and it's very quiet. He usually just hangs out around the house or in the woods right next to the house. He hears us pull into the street and is always waiting by the door to be let in if he's been out. I try to make sure he is in every night (so he can have his shower in the morning) and if we are away for a few days, we lock him inside. If it's storming or raining or REALLY cold, he won't go out. Sissy cat.
