I alluded earlier, that I'm currently flaunting the Mint flavor. It has,
quite frankly,
blown my fucking mind.

For the user that needs a bunch of crap- (I say this because every added
app,
and much auto-configured stuff, adds vulnerabilities, and a purist would be
partly running *nix for the added security) it's perfect. Nice little Live
CD... the
rest you get over the wire- gigs, and gigs of mind-boggling-ly awesome crap.

This version of Open Office actually works pretty damn good, my nvidia
drivers
are plopped in with a nice little installer, that Mint automatically
installed for
me. Really, just a smooth time with this one. And I've played with a few
OSs
in the last few- FreeBSD (sweet for my server), SuSE (also sweet, but used
the most, so swiched up for others), Fedora, Debian and a couple others.

Linux Mint has been the smoothest, getting drivers for stuff, automagically
setting up the sdio card reader, etc.. Just flipping super slick, since
I've
played with this stuff since, well, things like the sdio and bluetooth were
so painful- hell, just setting up X-windwos (only needed cuz I do graphic
stuff too- I could be a command-line cowboy otherwise (lol)) was like, fuck.

I bet a small install would do fine- I went all out. Beryl, which adds some

super-configurable, mind-flipping graphic touches to the desktop (think
vista's aero (sp?) on steroids, with loads of themes, etc..), Open Office,
and DVD *cough* editing software, crazy "find pictures like this thing I
draw" photo-management software, etc.... Just fun, useful stuff.

Really I was impressed with all of them tho. Every flavor had a robust
package management system (I love BSD's ports) and relativly painless
install. Mint fit my desktop best because of their mentality and my varied
needs. Check it out if you haven't heard of it- I hadn't- and I bit- and I
love it.

It's so spiffy, I dunno how it would run on old HW. (but I'd assume still
10x
better than a Microsoft equiv.. (Maybe not that much, but better. My
system is now much better at multi-tasking, for instance. Tons of crap
open, but it doesn't "feel" like it, most times)). I only run beryl when
I'm
feeling CSI-y, like. You could easily do without it, and still have a
desktop
that, out of the box, destroys any equivilent (but spelled with an a).

Linux and other Open OSes may still not be for everyone, but OH MY GOD!
They are getting close. From the super dweeb to the uber-noob. POWER!
FREEDOM! RESPONSIBILITY! (but perhaps not in that order).

Mint and a 49cc scooter, have been the two most fun things I do of late.
And the scooter needs a little work. And it's getting cold out there.
Silly, but true. ('sides my kid of course! The pentultimate in fun! ).

*sigh** yeah. Good stuff. Been meaning to say how good. Maybe a bit
more eloquently, with a few more fuck yeahs and whatnot. Still, tho.
