If you've got the space you might consider Virtual PC.  It's free (from
Microsoft) and not large (about 35 meg installed) but you do need space for
your virtual machines.   A basic Linux install shouldn't take up much space
at all.

It's hard to fully explain how nice it is to try out new things in a
comfortable environment compared to a little-used machine sitting in a
corner.  ;^)  Your good monitor, keyboard mouse, desk, chair, etc.
