Diesel provides 2 benefits:

1.) Conservation.  You can get 50mpg diesels that provide all the
power a consumer could want.

2.) Conversion.  You can make diesel from many different type of oil
including bio-sources like seaweed, but also from my favorite source,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jatropha

What this all means is that you could slowly convert from
petroleum-based diesel to bio-diesel.

One risk, of course, is that now you're growing fuel but, IMO, that's
a step above digging for it!  And jatropha is a weed that grows in the
desert so it could solve world hunger.

It's a 2-fer!

Further, we wouldn't just need to rely on one plant, we could cultivate many.
