I don't think the Democratic party spun off the KKK, but rather it was
a result of the Civil War. Essentially it was, and is, a modern
American insurgency pretty similar to Iraq.

Another interesting point is that shows the evolution of the parties.

The Democrats - near as I can remember anyway - were the original rich
man's party and gun right's advocates due to their DFL type
background; i.e., farmers.

As farming converted from 90% of our economy to 5% the party seemed to
evolve to what it is today, a catch-all. Didn't Will Rogers famously
say something like, "I don't belong to an organized political party,
I'm a Democrat"?

Anyway the real progression can be seen in the south where the farmer
tradition includes the democrat tradition; which is at odds with civil
rights, the place the Democrats migrated too.

At the same time, Republicans have been 3 groups: social
conservatives, fiscal conservatives, and FP conservatives. Thus given
the Christian tradition it was only natural that The South would drift
Republican.
