That's the core of our disagreement - I think he is.

If I know it's I'm accountable for what an employee 5 times removed
does, I'm sure as hell going to put process in place to ensure that -
as much as humanly possible - I know EXACTLY what's going on, spot
risks before they become issues, and have mitigation plans in place
should something happen.

Now, will shit happen?  Sure.  But a good leader takes accountability
for shit happening and plans around it.  e.g., business continuity
plan.

A good leader considers herself responsible and accountable for
everything that happens in her area of control whether it's "her
fault" or not.

If someone is uncomfortable with that level of responsibility then
they shouldn't seek leadership positions.
