I knew who Ayers was, since I remember when he and his wife "came out" and surrendered, at the same point in time I was starting to pay attention to national and world events (and punk rock, fwiw). I was outraged at everyone in the story (them, the weathermen, the people who helped them, the government for the surveillance, the government for screwing up the prosecution. )
