Is not laughable, IMHO,

It wasn't America's intrinsicness that prevented us from traveling
further down the wrong road, the many times we've started on it.

It was good people, speaking out.  That's not a "sure thing", if
history has taught us anything.

The civil war part is debatable, but not the general sentiment.
