Well, the problem is that a large percentage of the population wants to do just 
that. That's why I say, okay, let them have the word, but give all the same 
rights and privileges to gay unions as well. I've known quite a few Christians 
(my parents for instance) that don't have a problem with gays having civil 
unions and the same rights...they just are stuck up on the word "marriage" 
being given to it.

Oh, I definitely do know some. There is still plenty dislike of gays in the 
secular base as well, and also just fear of people abusing marriage for legal 
means even more than it already is.

I've known some. My own denomination, United Methodist, is probably one of the 
more open for gay and lesbian (one of the reasons I like it although I 
personally am straight), but it's still officially considered a sin and they 
aren't allowed to marry or become ministers. But otherwise you can be openly 
gay and be in the church. There actually is a group specifically for gay and
