>It is absolutely a religious issue. There is no secular evidence that >homosexuality is a negative:
That doesn't mean that there aren't still *plenty* of non-religious people that don't support gay marriage. In fact, the last guy I dated seriously was an agnostic and totally against any additional rights for gays. Yet, he would be very offended if I said he was a homophobe. >I've never, not >once, heard an organized refusal of gays of rights that wasn't religiously >motivated Organized - yes. That is not the same as what an individual thinks and how they vote. Also, marriage being only a man and woman is not a strictly Christian thing. Other religions such as Islam and Orthodox Judaism also exclude same-sex marriage and consider homosexuality as a sin. >It doesn't matter if people think that they're "icky" - personal opinion >doesn't matter here: what matter is if people think that the United States >should discriminate against this group (or indeed any group of law-abiding, >productive citizens). Again, you're missing the point. Much as we'd like to think otherwise, personal opinion often *is* what it does come down to, and that opinion will have to change before laws change as well. Addressing some of the fears people has is critical, because people often vote on the things they are most afraid of (a good reason Bush got a second term!) Do religious people fight the hardest against it? Absolutely. Part of the reason is that religious people fear it being the first step to being *required* to accept gay marriage in their faith. That's why it would seem to me that the most important thing is to more clearly separate it from "marriage" and just define it as civil unions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/message.cfm/messageid:282726 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5
