I suspect Cavel will track Ellen back to the fleet, for one final showdown between the RTF + Rebel cylons, and Cavel's group. The irony is, Cavel has enslaved the cylons, mechanical and skinjobs, to enact his revenge against the humans for enslaving the cylons. He has already started the cycle over again.
As to the question about them just wandering space for a year, my guess is, yes, to some degree. No doubt they were trying to track the RTF and the rebel cylons, but Cavel's self-preservation would have prevented him from endangering his last however-many selves are still active until res tech is rebuilt.
