We have to try diplomacy, the alternatives (capitulation, military assault)
are completely unappealing. And no, the leaders of Iran do not reflect the
views of the populace. We've known that for years. The mullahs and their
lackeys are an armed gang of thugs who long ago terrorized the majority of
Iranians into obedience.

That obedience has been fraying around the edges for years as younger
members of society chafe at the extremist social prohibitions of the regime.
Their economy is tanking, their isolation from the world is dragging on into
its fourth decade, and the Iranian public is sick of it. Part of the
political calculus by the Iranian leadership is that they can take domestic
public pressure off themselves by stirring up public anger against Israel
and the United States.

European thinking on this matter has been that we could get them to back
down in exchange for better relations with the rest of the world, but that
approach has failed to win support among the mullahs, who remain as
extremist as ever.
