I don't fly jets, so I couldn't tell you for their situation.  I know with
multi-engine props, if you suspect an engine failure you throttle back the
engine you suspect is bad (don't turn it off) for verification.  If one
engine stays up to speed, you have the right (failed) one and can shut it
down and attempt a restart.  If it gets real quiet then you got it wrong and
can throttle up the good one again to stay aloft.  I am not familiar with
the emergency procedures for jets though, but I suspect something similar.
Remember also that airline pilots are extremely well trained and have a
checklist to follow for just about every conceivable emergency.
