My feeling is TAKE IT.

Having the ability to access that backend legacy system _from_ Cold Fusion is an
invaluable skill..

I've now been involved on a number of jobs where the inventory and POS system is
AS/400 based, and someone will want to tack on a internet web cart.

This inevitably involves an RPG programmer writing some new interface code and
procedures to handle the new hooks.

If I had that skill (I've tinkered but not seriously developed), I could solo on a
number of these jobs, rather than needing inhouse, approved support.

There is still a lot of "big iron" left in the world (if you will forgive me for
making big iron so little), and RPG is not going to go away.

And if you can wangle some Websphere training/seat time, as well, it can't hurt.

I have a job offer pending for a position as an RPG programmer. The money
isn't what I had at my previous job, but the benefits are out of this world.
The company has a 30+ year history and is one of the largest hospitals in
the New Orleans area. They also have a hard deadline of Friday for the
offer.

Should I take the job and hope I can return to Cold Fusion in the future? I
had an interview for a CF position yesterday, but I was one of 3 developers
in line for the job. This unemployment sucks.

BTW, RPG is the language used in IBM AS/400 systems and is one of the big
languages used in financial systems development.
