The "containment dome" (which always reminds me of the Simpsons movie) didn't work because methane gas crystallized and clogged up the tube. They had use that sort of strategy before but never at the depths this oil volcano is at. The increased pressure and lower temps make the physics down there substantially different from a couple hundred feet of water.
