Nope IP and named pipes are enabled in client and server parts according to
config manager.

TCP/IP is not enabled by default on sql express. You have to go into
the Configuration Manager (which is a seperate app) and enable the
networking protocol. By default, it only turns on shared memory or
named pipes, can't recall which off the top of my head, which is fine
for .Net apps but no love for jdbc.
