Ah, I missed the part about studio express not being able to connect.
Did you install it as a named instance (which is the default) or did
you tell it to install as the default instance (which sounds weird, I
know). If you did it as a named instance, I find that things get
weird. It is one of the reasons I tend to use SQL Server Developer
edition instead of Express on my local box. I'd uninstall it and
reinstall it, making sure not to do the named instance. Or use
Developer edition. Also, take a look at the Event log just to see if
it is throwing any errors.
