70% opposed to the idea of building, when asked for a 20 second response.

Not that they shouldn't be allowed, but that it wasn't a good idea.

If asked if I thought they should, I too would have been opposed. In that I
don't think this particular fight was necessarily the right one. Or handled
well from a management/message perspective.

Opposed in that if I was one deciding on where to build, I wouldn't have
chosen there.

Just as I wouldn't want a mall, or a strip club, or a clothing sweat shop
built there. But, if I was on the local zoning board, or the local chamber
of commerce, or even spent 5 minutes thinking about my answer, I might have
a very different take.

But, I also _love_ the fact that I live in America, and that for the most
part, my particular biases and opinions just don't matter too much. The law
is the law, and we should all be equal under it.

I _love_ having my own petty opinions and prejudices and knee-jerk emotional
reactions pointed out, and the ideals of our country, codified in our laws,
make me rethink.

At this point, I am glad they are pushing for this. I think we need to get
these _horrible_ thoughts our there, and start confronting these bigoted
opinions. I think we _do_ need to have a national discussion on this.

And I personally think Obama has this issue righter than anyone else I've
heard.

They _do_ have the right to build there. They should _not_ be descriminated
against on basis of race or gender or religion or sexual preference.
Building there may not have been the best of ideas, and most people probably
wouldn't have done it.

The 9/11 terrorists were, what, all told in the conspiracy, 200 people? Out
of 1.5 billion. We are _not_ at war with Islam. Muslim Americans are
Americans who are Muslims.

As this goes on, I think a little light shed on this topic might be the
right thing to do. And best-case, this center will continue the dialogue
this building has started. Worst case, they antis are proved right, and we
learn that this center was built for nefarious purposes. At which point
Homeland Security will use some of the scary new laws, and take it away.
