One of the things at play here is that freedom is not a universal value, but
power is.  Freedom is highly valued by most people in our society, but those
with power (however little) like to assert that power in many ways.  We have
laws to protect our freedoms, but when you or I go through a process like
this our goal may be to get it over with as quickly as possible without
asserting our rights in the process.  Those who believe they have power grow
accustomed to people just doing what they want, so I believe it's a good
thing when someone like this guy comes along and has the inclination to
fully exercise his rights and remind those with power where that power ends.
I wouldn't throw him a parade, but I give him a nod of appreciation for
reminding everyone that despite the normal "flow" of polite questioning, we
do have rights that can't be violated, even if you make yourself look like a
prick in the process.
