Rule number one when dealing with any type of law enforcement in the Us: answer no questions under any circumstances without a lawyer present. This isn't to be a dick or to waste time. It's because A) we have the right to refuse to answer questions here and B) there are a lot of bad cops here (not necessarily corrupt, though we've got those to) who will take the slightest excuse to arrest you. Granted for every bad or corrupt cop we have there are probably 10 or 15 good ones, but you have no way of telling which you're dealing with till it's too late. Honestly I'd do the same as this guy did.
