The 360 has been the best selling console for the last 4 months. It gained enormous market share in the face of the incumbents, Nintendo and Sony and did so by pulling people from those platforms.
Previously, Microsoft never had any experience in the console business, or even much in the Game development business. I would say for them, the 360 was a great success and can be counted as one of their few forays into a new market. Yes, the 360 had issues (fixed now with the latest 360 slim and before that with the newer model of 360 where the circuit boards were changed) but those issues were not greater than the benefits that consumers saw in the platform. Xbox Live is the best multiplayer and online ecosystem of all the consoles. If Windows 7 can achieve the same results, they will certainly have a winner on their hands.
