I hate to say it, but so often developer contractors are judged by the bling
of their laptops.

Functional is less desirable than shiny for many paying clients. They want
YOU to have the gear THEY want.

On my budget, that means that big and clunky and functional and cheap went
by the wayside, and I had to settle for small and shiny. The small offset
the expensive part of shiny.

But, with those tiny projectors now-a-days, I found that pairing a small
notebook with a tiny projector gave me the "cutting edge" look my clients
wanted.

With that said, small laptops were fine for html and dev, even Flash dev,
but not so good for video. But I wasn't selling much video work, so it
wasn't a problem.

Because hooking up one or more external flatscreens, keyboards and mice were
standard during work hours at home, the small size of the laptop was never a
problem.

(I had a tiny Viao, a tiny HP, and a tiny Mac, and all were usable,)

If I had my choice, and had to pony up for a laptop at the moment, I would
probably go for the cheap Mac Air just announced. Way overpriced compared to
PCs, but dang, that is a nice form factor.

Of course my current at-home laptop is a cheap Toshiba Satellite. it was
like $420. Gets the job done, but wouldn't lug it in front of impressionable
clients.
