I never did have a 9600 baud modem - but when I was in the dorms at
Western Michigan, we had 9600 baud direct serial connections in our
dorms.  Not quite ethernet but mighty fine for the time (1990-1995).
Since the 9600 baud serial connection didn't use compression it was
faster, I think, than the 9600 baud modems.. and didn't tie up the
phone line!

spent a lot of time MUDding in '93.... too much time!
