I think most people would better be able to stomach the cuts if there were also tax increases on those who really can afford it. It's this fascist glee that the republicans have in protecting the poor wealthy people that makes everyone want to vomit.

Yes, they are related, but they are still 2 separate issues. Both Republicans and Democrats are responsible for this mess, not just one side or the other. So both sides need to realize (as does the American public) that the only way out of this mess is to tighten the belt a little and raise taxes AND cut spending. Real compromise comes from each side making concessions, not from each side threatening the other until it agrees.
