I think MJ is one of those folks that is not 100% rock, but he did have a
huge influence as a child to young adult on rock.  Every genre has a pop
category, and depending on what time period you are referring can
differentiate what someone saying pop is referring to.  R&B, Soul, Rock,
Jazz, Blues, etc...are very intertwined at various points in their history.
