I know you weren't asking me, but I have thought about this sort of thing
before and thought I'd give my answer.

I am very willing to recognize talent and skill in any genre of music, even
genres I don't like. Generally though, artists are automatically
disqualified from any chance of respect if any of the following is true:

1) They won their fame on a TV game show (ie: American Idol)
2) They are a trained puppet (ie: Boy bands, manufactured pop stars)

Artists generally gain credibility and respect in my mind if they are able
to *create* music and performance, not just regurgitate it. I am even
willing to extend this credibility to boy band and American Idol types
later in their careers if they actually create something of their own or
have some other unusually outstanding talent beyond simply "a good voice".

JT? That white boy can dance.
