The Nazis were not socialists. They fit the definition of fascism more than socialism, in fact in the 1920's and 30's they were very violently opposed to socialism. From Wikipedia: (hey its a good starter).

It would appear that the canard that the Nazi's were socialist is just that an extreme right wing lie.
