We used to go ice fishing pretty regularly.  At first my dad had a hand
auger, that you had to crank yourself.  Cold Lake could be 3 feet or more
thick of ice though.  We eventually got a gas powered one.

I've done it in Maine as well.  I actually learned how to drive on Cold
Lake.
