A great many of them inherited it from someone else, many of them also inherited it from someone else. Any new wealth was done with the help of rads paid for by our tax dollars, were educated in schools paid with our tax dollars...so no, they didn't doing completely independent of any other help. Not even the fathers or grandfathers or whatever of the people that inherited it. They benefited from a system that allowed them to get rich and made use of resources that they did not personally pay for.

I disagree. A great many of the wealthy in this country come from family wealth built before all of these things were prevalent. A great many wealthy got that way through ideas they had themselves, and would have had without any of those things. People have found and worked mines and all sorts of things. Also, we didn't pay for a lot of those things until 1917, before that the government was small enough to be self sufficient. The social contract didn't require that we extort our population.
