Perhaps it is harsh. I think what bothers me is their insistence on exact observation of certain laws, such as those they claim prohibit homosexuality, yet they can arbitrarily change the observation of the Sabbath to a different day of the week at their whim, and ignore more of the other laws completely. It is hypocrisy in its worst manifestation.
