"If we make peace with the Taliban by any means other than absolute
and unconditional
surrender we'll be showing terrorists that their tactics work"

The question is: Do politicians and the people have the stomach to execute
a plan that would bring about unconditional surrender? Throw in the
pressure applied from corporation to leave the infrastructure in place as
well.

As pointed out, the people have next to nothing. Destroying the poppy
fields would leave them less than nothing. All external money supplies
would need to be cut off, which means strong arming oil rich Middle Eastern
countries.

I say at this point, no. No one has the stomach or the balls to go hard at
the problem. The Taliban is a brutal regime which should be exterminated,
but it won't happen unless they do something drastic that infuriates the
western world.
