Sandy-

there's a method to their madness :-)

if the Y W and R are little donuts, they are the
standard format for audio (and some video) connections,
called RCA plugs.

W is audio left speaker.
R is audio right speaker.
Y is composite video.

each vertical stripe goes together.
so, you apparently have 2 separate audio/video inputs to
your tv. they might have labels like Input A and Input B
or 1 and 2. Usually in black-on-black plastic, you need
a flashlight to see anything <g>.

the WR pair on the left might be audio out - to take the
sound from a tv program and feed it to a stereo.

if you had S-video (better), there would be a round jack
with 4 pins in an upside-down V shape like this:
 ..
  .
so you probably don't have S-video...

Sooooo, make sure the DVD you buy has Yellow White and
Red jacks on the back that look like your tv -
 "composite video".

You might want to make sure the DVD player also has 3
additional jacks labelled "component video" in case you
later replace your tv.

HTH.
Have a nice weekend.
