Actually, you have to buy one $40 modem to get online. That's all.

As far as game publishers choosing to charge on a per game basis, that is a
result of publishers having the option to host games on their own servers as
opposed to going through Microsoft's subscription system. I would rather pay
to play a game than pay for the right to play a game online, and there is a
big difference there.

I have no clue what all this new content is everybody is harping about. Can
anyone clue me in as to why the XBOX constantly needs to be serviced?

you have to buy the adaptor kit and harddrive to play online with ps2 (which
i believe costs significantly more than a one year xbox subscription).

also on ps2, each game publisher has the option to charge on a per game
basis. I believe that EASports is going to start doing this soon.

with xbox live you pay a subscription ($50 for first year) and then can play
all live enabled games at no extra charge. you can also download new
content, maps, etc... some of which is free some of which may cost extra.
