I totally agree. A few years back here in Holland we only had 3 public
television stations, plus the public channels from Uk, Belgium and
Germany. Today we still have those, but also a lot of new commercial
stations. And since these commercial stations decided that good
subtitling is too expensive, we now have subtitling with spelling
errors, grammar errors and worst of all subtitlers that just didn't
understand the thigs they were translating. I whish it would be possible
to turn subtitles off on normal television shows. I almost exclusively
watch Dutch, Engelish and German television, and have no problem
whatsoever understanding those without subtitles.

Which brings me to last christmas. There were times that one could zap
from one channel to the next and finding Mathilda (by Roald Dahl) on at
least 4 channels. Same goes for the Muppets Treasure Island. Luckily for
me the BBC was one of them and although the film version of Mathilda is
nothing compared to the book (the book is much more serious) having it
without 20 commercial breaks, without subtitles and in widescreen was a
relief. But still, why 4 times in two days. Aren't there any good older
or more obscure movies that one could watch around Christmas? Well
probably there are, but who will watch them? There aren't enough people
in this world it seems who can justify the precious commercial time to
show good television anymore.

Do wel also went to the videostore to get some good movies (and
downloaded a bunch that weren't worth the money, but were still better
than the crap on tv). So here's my list of good things to watch:

* Dune (the miniseries)
* Black Adder (all 4 seasons, be sure to buy the collectorsbox, it's 1/4
the price of the single season DVD's)
* Mysts of Avalon
* The Red Violin
* Shakespeare in Love
* Saving private Ryan
* The Story Tellers collection
* The Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le pact des Loups) (In french, but
luckily with good subtitles, as my french is not quite as good as I
would like)
* Buffy The Vampire Slayer (For the good and funny action)
* What Dreams May Come
* Dead poets' society

And since last week I'm also watching Everwood on TV. And it's one of
the few new series that I find good enough to watch. And in this case
I'd even go as far as to say that it's very good.

Well, the above list should be able to keep you all a week or two from
the streets and out of harms way from the dangarous commercial
television stations :)

Greetings,

Jesse
