The problem is that any emergent disease strikes the fringes of the population first. The gay community in the late 70's and early 80's were perfect incubating grounds. THe public health community were given solid hints that the community was vunerable with the increased infection rates of herpes and other STD's. Given the use of such disinhibiting drugs as cocaine etc, it was almost a given that any new STD would have started out in this community. I personally think that if AIDS had struck the children of this country's elite first, prevention would have been instituted immediately, and a cure would have been found 10 years ago.
