Probably a lot better for a lot of people at the time. The French were 
mainly interested in gaining advantage over the British in the Caribbean 
and India. By supporting the revolutionaries in the 13 Colonies, they hoped 
to stretch the British forces to the point of gaining advantage elsewhere. 
Then there was the simple matter of a bit of revenge for the loss of their 
colonies in North America.

It would have been very interesting to see what would have occurred if the 
government of George III was more reasonable towards the complaints of the 
colonists and the French were not so interested in helping out the 
revolutionaries.
