I have some experience with a mixed 11a/b unit (Cisco Aironet 1200). If you
have a clear line of sight and you are with a dozen meters, up to about 17
Mbps is possible. If you go further away or don't have a line of sight, the
performance drops rather drastically. Over 50 meters, 11b is faster as 11a.

So unless you have some interference that is very specific for the 2.4 GHz
band or are always near the access point and have a line of sight, don't go
for 11a. (For the rest the Aironets are very nice, 802.1x security rocks,
but they might be a bit expensive if you are not with a large academic or
government institution.)
