: There are two items that stick out in my mind as sources of
: contention. The first was whether or not she should take away
: points for a
: student who used poor grammar. I said she should. She didn't think so,
: because that particular portion of the test was not testing
: grammar it was
: testing reading comprehension. I think a 6th grader should be able to
: write complete sentences, end of story. Oddly that same student
: did write
: correct sentences in the "Grammar Testing" portion of the test.

My dad has a saying:
"Be careful what you pay people to do. They just might do it."
In this case, be careful what you tell people you are testing them on,
because that is where they will focus their attentions. /All/ of their
attentions. If you tell people that they will be tested on grammar, they
will try to use good grammar. If you do not, they will not unless good
grammar is a habit for them.

: I remember this sentence:
: They hope to witness the exiting event.
:
: Which I declared as a fact. The GF said it was an opinion because it
: used the word hope. If it said "The event is exciting" that would be
: opinion. But "they hope to witness the exciting event" is a fact.

No, it isn't. You cannot prove or disprove that I hope anything. You can
imply one way or another, and I can state whether I hope or not, but since
hope is an intangible, it cannot be stated as a fact.

Addmittedly, that's a semantic difference, but it's a pretty important one.
