It depends. It seems that American ferrets from the big breeders are
steadily decreasing in life span. Years ago, people were saying 7 to 10
years. More recently is seems to be 5 to 8 years. Our vet, who has been an
exotics specialist for the last 15 years or so, has noted the steady
decrease in longevity. When I was talking with him he said he's going to do
a case control study about it and see if there are any commonalities.

Now the small private breeders, or hobbyist breeders by and large produce
ferrets that are much longer lived on the average. Mind you this is
anecdotal evidence mostly. No one has really done a serious study on it.

So I'd say that ferrets on the average live between 6 and 8 years.
