Having seen a professor suffer from gout in college, have quite a bit of empathy. Friendly suggestion: skip the field-goal-kicking practice while it's inflamed.

re: falling down while recuperating, I will try *very* hard not to !!!
I'll also be glad to lose the cane, even if it does get me a little more respect in public (people make way, give you more room, etc.). And being able to pre-board on Southwest even with a "C" boarding pass just isn't enough to make up for the ouchies :-)
