yeah it is. there was a time when I was considered daring by many of my
friends for heading North of 60th St. and for heading into Brooklyn. Now
I've got friends living on the outskirts of Harlem well above 80th St. as
well as certain parts of Brooklyn. Very nice neighborhoods by NY standards.
I suppose it does have a lot to do with what you're used to. Being used to
ALL of Philly (including some of the very rough parts), the entire is;and of
Manhattan seems safe to me (including Harlem) and I feel pretty much at home
in most of Brooklyn as well. I haven't speant a great deal of time in
Queens, but nothing there has ever bothered me either.

New York is a completely different city than it was even 10 years ago.
It's
very safe, and extremely commercialized now. Hell Disney owns a bunch of
stuff in times square, and you really have to look to find the porn
palaces
now :)
Seriously, there is still no other feeling to me, that matches simply
walking down the street in Manhattan. I guess I got that same feeling of
awe, and pride in man's abilities walking the streets in Rome, thinking
about the amazing efforts it must have taken to create such a great
civilization. Of course they built it with slaves, so we still one up
them
:)

I was raised in Texas, but there is a very strong memory that has stayed
with me
of a 5 day business trip to NYC a little over 20 years ago.
I stayed in a hotel (sorry, I don't remember the name) that overlooked
Grand
Central Station, and the place Where I was attending a conference was on
42nd
Street, in the Mobil Building.
Little things of note, was the double dead-bolt locks on the hotel room
door,
and a separate key being issued for a dead bolt lock on the room closet
door,
where we were admonished to lock up all our belongings any time we left
the
room. The seated security guard on each floor, just outside the
elevator.
When we arrived at the conference, note was made of an armed security
guard on
each floor of the Mobil building and a double ID check once one got off
the
elevator before entry was granted to the offices on that floor. The
first
order
of business at the conference was an admonishment to never, never go
anywhere
outside alone, but move about in a minimum of pairs, preferably more.
One morning while 4 of us were walking through Grand Central Station as
a
short
cut to the conference center, we saw first hand a person being mugged
right in
the middle of the crowd, within ten feet of a uniformed policeman, and
no
one
seemed to pay any attention. After that most of us did not even dare to
go
anywhere after dark, although the stories of the ones that did, told us
that
they had no problems visiting Times Square, etc. although their
observations of
what took place in that area raised goose bumps on this country boy.
Another thing was the seemingly rudeness of natives toward visitors. I,
of
course was outed as a Texan any time I spoke.

| come on... DC's neighborhoods and people aren't that bad if you stay
in
the
| OK parts of town... and neither is New York. I am originally from New
York
| but grew-up in Philadelphia during my teenage years and very early
twenties,
| and then I lived and partied in DC until severalmonths ago. Quite
honestly,
| there's no such thing as a big city with nothing but safe
neighborhoods.
If
| I had to rate cities in terms of danger, DC is definitely more
dangerous
| than New York but Philadelphia is by far more dangerous than DC. If
we're
| talking about doing business and not getting ripped-off (which is what
I
| believe the original topic was) then I'd say you're least likely to
get
| ripped-off in Philladelphia, then DC, and most ikely to get ripped off
by a
| shop-owner in NY. That said, if you're a sucker then you're just as
likely
| to et ripped-off in any city and if you've got common sense then
you'll
most
| likely be fine anywhere. Damn, all this talk about rough
neighborhoods
| makes me miss Philly.

| whoa.
|
| This is the DC I know? Where a woman got shot driving her children
home
| from choir practice because she made the mistake of being on North
Capitol
| Steet when two drug dealers decided to have it out? The land of the
| three-hour rush hour? You *are* kidding, right? Take a nice stroll
around
| Howard University or Johns Hopkins Hospital at midnight and then
come
tell
| me how sane the population is :)
