It happened.  The guys that did it got caught.  Clinton was in office.  Bush
was traveling in Africa I believe.  You can google it.  There are sources
about it I am sure you will trust.

BTW going back to the UN mandate, and how we were attempting to enforce it.
Now you guys all know how I feel about the UN, however at the end of DS1
Iraq made agreements to disarm, move troops, and only maintain certain troop
strengths and types.  He violated the terms of the agreements many times.
Don't you remember how many times he would take pot shots at patrol aircraft
in the no fly zones?

Finally he wasn't meeting his disclosure requirements.  When that happened
he was given an ultimatum.  Full disclosure or war.  He chose war.  He had
ample time to meet with the inspectors and do the right thing.  He didn't.

I don't remember us doing so, and that is a long time to let something
go without doing something about it. A lot has been made about this
event, I don't believe it ever happened.

I mean, the secret service is all over people on this list who hint
about that stuff, why would anyone tolerate a legitimate attempt?

Let's get real.

By my logic when he tried to assassinate the president we should have
gone
to total war with that nation.

One of the major premises for going to war was to enforce a U.N. mandate
issued at the end of the first Gulf war.

Soverignty, by definition, means that one possesses supreme rank or
power and recognizes no authority over its own.

If we are a soverign nation, why would we be fighting to enforce a U.N.
mandate or using it as a justification for our actions?

It's funny when people start talking about soverignty and the fact we
have a right to do whatever we want. Iraq was a soverign nation too,
and, no matter how bad the management, no one has the right to tell them
to do otherwise if they are a soverign nation.

By your logic, nothing illegal happened ever could have happened under
Saddam's government. The moment we think we act without responsibility
to the rest of the world, we abandon all standards of accountability to
which to hold other governments.

The U.N. has no regulatory control over the United States.

We are a sovereign nation.

Hence not illegal.
