Agreed. The laser disk version of Star Wars is magnificent in the amount
of detail it displays.

It is also cited as the reason Lucas felt the need to redo the special
effects in the latest 'edition' of the movie. The idea of cardboard
cutouts and sub-par models was too much for the man.

The gold standard for high-quality Star Wars is the Laserdisc release.  
Original effects - incredible sound, lots of extras... the picture's so
sharp, you can see the bubblegum and athletic shoes ILM used for far-off

space ships in the Fleet battle climax of Return of the Jedi.
