Actually it looks like an interesting convergence of things. They passed the
AWB extension as an amendment to another gun bill that would have protected
gun manufacturers from lawsuits. They also passed an amendment to close the
gun show loophole and voted against an amendment to allow LEO to carry
across state borders.
Ultimately, it looks like the amendments were what overwhelmingly killed the
bill. So while most news outlets I heard were saying they voted to extend
the AWB, it wasn't really extended. Interesting reporting.
On a side note of personal interest, Senator Feingold here who is a Democrat
and regarded by many conservatives to be a "left wing liberal" voted against
the AWB extension while many Republicans voted for it. Just goes to show
that people shouldn't stereotype.
